Philomena | Indy Week

Rated PG-13 94 min. 2013

Judi Dench stars as Philomena Lee, an unassuming pensioner who'd slaved for the Catholic nuns who sheltered her when she was an unwed mother. Pained by the loss of her baby to adoption without her consent, she has her cause taken up by cynical journalist Martin Sixsmith, played by Steve Coogan, who also co-wrote the script and produced the film. The search for a child lost through the maze of adoption, from both the point of view of parent and child, has been the subject of many films, both documentary and fiction. Director Stephen Frears' focus is not so much on the quest but on the way Philomena's Catholic faith informs her life, in spite of all the pain and injustice. Dench's interactions with her odd-couple partner Coogan continually evolve and surprise, and are the heart of this heartfelt, if melancholy, tale.
