Phil Cook & the Guitarheels, Ryan Gustafson's Dead Tongues

When: Sat., Jan. 4, 9:30 p.m. 2014

During the last year, both Phil Cook and Ryan Gustafson have worked to space themselves somewhat from the image of solo singer-songwriters. They've added band names to their respective projects, and they've elaborated on their own sounds, too, putting full-band power beneath their sometimes-lonesome musings. With the support of the revolving and wonderfully named outfit The Guitarheels, Megafaun co-founder Cook has covered an album by his hero Ry Cooder in full and more openly embraced the country-rock lather at which his other band has hinted. Last year, under the name Dead Tongues, Gustafson released Desert, his second LP of wonderful and woeful songs that use forlorn country drifts and refracted pop jangles to expound upon romance, tragedy and wanderlust. —Grayson Haver Currin
