Peter Case

When: Sat., Aug. 7, 8:30 p.m. 2010

Musical and otherwise, Peter Case's travels are worthy of a book. So he wrote one. The memoir As Far as You Can Get Without a Passport, which began as a series of blog posts, documents Case's days playing blues in clubs when he was barely a teen in Buffalo, N.Y., and ends with his landing in San Francisco a few years later, an old-soul youngster playing songs on the street. It's impossible to read without keeping "Travellin' Light" in mind. With almost 40 years of story left to tell—from The Nerves and The Plimsouls to a solo career that rivals that of any hard-touring genius troubadour, not to mention collaborations with a roots-music who's who and fan letters from the likes of Bruce Springsteen and Steve Earle—there's a lot of memoiring to go. Open-heart surgery in the winter of 2009 came close to slamming shut the covers of the autobiography. But for the indomitable Case, who's back on the road behind the therapeutically rocking Wig!, the procedure proved but a pit stop. —Rick Cornell
