Peter Carlson

When: Tue., June 4, 7:30 p.m. 2013

Lord knows there are a lot of Civil War books out there, but Peter Carlson has a good one. It's the true tale of two rogue-ish, disreputable journalists (there was no other kind in those days) who get into some serious jams trying to report the war from the field. The opening chapter of Junius and Albert's Adventures in the Confederacy is arrestingly cinematic. To witness the coming siege of Vicksburg, our heroes hitch a ride on a tug-drawn barge that's attempting to sneak a load of hay down the river past a Confederate battery at night. The sentries spot the smugglers and light up the barges, and our heroes end up floating downriver on bales of hay, looking up at exploding shells. We're sold. (Carlson also appears at McIntyre's in Pittsboro on Wednesday, June 5, at 6:30 p.m.) —David Fellerath
