Pete Anderson

When: Sat., Sept. 7 2013

Known mostly as the producer and guitarist who helped shape the Los Angeles honky-tonk sound with which Dwight Yoakam revitalized country music in the mid-late 1980s, Pete Anderson actually was born and raised in Detroit. As such, it's no surprise that his new solo album, Birds Above Guitarland, reverberates with old-school blues and R&B grooves. It's not that his country leanings are absent—there's a twang to these licks that reminds us he's produced not only Yoakam but Tanya Tucker, Sara Evans and Mark Chesnutt. But there's also a soulful edge that reaffirms Anderson's deepest roots are in Motown, not Hollywood—which makes him a good fit for the blues-steeped Papa Mojo's stage. —Peter Blackstock
