Pelada

When: Tue., March 29, 7 p.m. 2011

Nearly a year ago, the soccer documentary Pelada played the Full Frame fest in Durham. It was a homecoming for the film, which had been nurtured at Duke's Center for Documentary Studies. But the film was only on the cusp of a year on the doc circuit, a tour that included a standing-room-only exhibition at Durham's Pinhook on the eve of last summer's FIFA World Cup. Pelada follows two former college soccer players—Gwendolyn Oxenham, a former Duke standout, and Luke Boughen, who played for Notre Dame—as they travel the world joining pickup soccer games. Part of the film's appeal is simply seeing how truly global the game is, whether it's played on urban rooftops in Japan or in Ecuadorian prisons. But it's also a journey for the filmmakers, who find that their playing careers are ending as they grapple for their place in the world outside of the sport. It's getting an encore screening tonight at 7 p.m. Filmmaker Rebekah Fergusson, one of the quartet who produced the film, will appear for discussion and questions. —David Fellerath
