Pauly Shore

How Pauly Shore fascinates me! Ubiquitous in his 1990s film career and his MTV appearances as "The Weasel," by the late 1990s this progeny of the legendary Comedy Store saw the limelight fade from the heyday of such projects as Encino Man and Bio-Dome. He hasn't completely faded into oblivion, continuing his stand-up career and appearing in various projects, including writing/directing/starring in the 2012 Showtime special Pauly Shore's Pauly-Tics (ugh), but even the tide of 1990s nostalgia has not seemed to turn in his direction. And he seems aware of this, lampooning himself in such pet projects as Pauly Shore Is Dead and Adopted. In some ways I find a tragic poetry to Shore, a man aware of his limitations, struggling to transcend them yet live within them. As the comedy website Splitsider recently wrote, "Whether you like what Pauly Shore does or not, it is hard to deny that he is constantly doing just that." Now you can see him do just that at Goodnights. Man, do you think he'll do "The Weasel"? —Zack Smith
