Paula Poundstone

When: Fri., Jan. 20, 8 p.m. 2012

Known for her wit and improvisational style, comedian Paula Poundstone has used self-deprecation to get her through up and down times. In 2001 her flourishing career was put on hold when she was arrested for driving drunk with her children in the car. She lost custody of her kids (she had both foster and adopted children) and entered rehab. In 2002, she regained custody of her adopted children and has since worked to rebuild her career through candid and humbled talk about her life and her mistakes. Today she's a regular panelist on NPR's Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me, and she appears to be flourishing again. Her 8 p.m. performance is sold out, but the box office says there's always a possibility that tickets (which were priced at $29–$39) will free up. —Meg Stein
