PAUL TAYLOR DANCE COMPANY | THURSDAY, JULY 2–SATURDAY, JULY 4, DURHAM

DURHAM PERFORMING ARTS CENTER—The most iconic living choreographer turns 85 on July 29, four months after Death and the Damsel, his latest dance worknumber 142, if you're counting—premiered in New York. After its uneven reviews (and reports of a reworked ending following its debut), Taylor is sticking to classics in his company's American Dance Festival appearance. The exuberant 1975 piece, Esplanade, presages what critic Gia Kourlas called the demon speed and rag-doll fluidity of 1987's Syzygy. The program closes with a work The Village Voice named one of Taylor's most "horrifying," with its warped-Mylar reflections, 1985's Last Look. 8 p.m. Thurs.–Fri.; 2 p.m. Sat., $19.25–$58, 123 Vivian St., Durham, 919-680-2787, www.americandancefestival.org.Byron Woods

Price: $10-$58
