Paul Reid

When: Thu., Jan. 31, 6 p.m. 2013

If you like historical biographies as much as my dad does, then you—also like my dad—will be having a rock-star moment when North Carolina author Paul Reid appears in Raleigh to promote Defender of the Realm, the long-awaited final volume of the Winston Churchill biography The Last Lion. Started by William Manchester, who died in 2004, it's regarded as the definitive work on the late prime minister, with Reid compiling the final volume from Manchester's extensive notes at the request of his old friend. This focuses on the years that defined Churchill's legacy and his role in battling the Nazis in World War II. Reid will appear for a signing only at Quail Ridge Books at 4 p.m., then will give a 50-minute lecture at Burning Coal Theatre's Murphey School Auditorium at 6 p.m. Tickets to the lecture are $10, or free with purchase of tickets to that evening's production of C.P. Taylor's Good. Visit and —Zack Smith

Price: $10 (free to those attending Jan 31 performance of Good)
