Parranda Navideña

When: Fri., Dec. 19, 7 p.m. 2014

Parranda is the Puerto Rican tradition of Christmas caroling door to door—eating, drinking and gathering with an impromptu band along the way. In that spirit, the Puerto Rican owners of Latin Quarters Restaurant, which opened in March, celebrate their first Christmas in business with a relaxed musical jam. Puerto Rico dusts off its native rhythms for the holidays—jíbaro music of the highlands, bombiplena from the coasts—so it’s a chance to hear music you won’t find in nightclubs. Bring a horn, cuatro, güiro or maracas, or just show up; a band of local notables led by Billy Marrero stoke the parranda. —Sylvia Pfeiffenberger
