Palm, Palberta, Naked Naps

When: Tue., July 25, 9 p.m. 2017

"The first Velvet Underground album only sold ten thousand copies, but everyone who bought it formed a band." Well-worn as this old Brian Eno quote is, the underlying idea of an outsider band that speaks to a tiny but influential crowd aptly describes Philly art-rock mavens Palm. The band's asymmetrical and downright strange guitar pop has spawned a sizable cult of freaks in the current DIY landscape. More than a few journalists have tried to box Palm in with nineties guitar experimentalists like Polvo, but the band's music is far too off-kilter to draw straight influence lines. On the new Shadow Expert, Palm tinges its freak tendencies with a near-lounge sensibility that suggests mid-nineties Stereolab. Where will it go next? Opener Palberta is a perfect pairing of kindred weirdo guitar pop. Plus Naked Naps. —David Ford Smith
