Paleface, Jkutchma & the 5 Fifths

When: Thu., Dec. 19, 9 p.m. 2013

In a quarter-century of making music, Paleface's artistic impulses have sharpened. He's not a great songwriter, but he knows his craft well, tends not to repeat himself and infuses everything with his personality. Blending Donovan, Ween and Lou Barlow, he makes earnest but offbeat acoustic music that balances vulnerability and frustration with a bemused ambivalence. Whatever the worry, tomorrow could be worse, right? As with most graduates of the New York anti-folk scene (see also: Moldy Peaches and Jeff Lewis), there's occasionally an overly self-conscious quality. But Paleface's gotten pretty good at accentuating the best parts and smoothing over the rest. —Chris Parker
