Pairdown, Wood Ear

When: Wed., Oct. 6, 9:30 p.m. 2010

Tonight's headlining bill flows naturally from Nightlight's free old-time jam, which runs from 5 until 9 p.m. Pittsburgh's Pairdown guides two acoustic guitars through interpretations of tunes from a sprawling folk catalog, with West African and Middle Eastern influences tugging gently against the bedrock of Appalachian reverence and reference. More playful than John Fahey, less technique-driven than Leo Kottke, Pairdown canters through comfortable tunes with assured grace. Durham's Wood Ear is the vehicle for Nate Tarr's mutually tender and tough folk-rock tunes, which are more assured than the band's sporadic live appearance schedule might suggest. —Grayson Currin
