Ah, family gatherings. Where would plays and independent films be without them? Yes, the dysfunctional get-together is an eternal wellspring of comedy and drama, and it helps if there's some religious, ethnic and/or social backdrop for it to take place against. Observe, for instance, the Cary Players production of Over the River and Through the Woods, from I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change playwright Joe DePietro. Nick Cristiano always has Sunday dinner with his four Italian grandparents, which is in and of itself a time bomb waiting to go off. But when Nick announces he's taking a new job in Chicago, his grandparents scramble to keep him in town. —Zack Smith
