Oulipo, Memphis Pencils, Messy Sparkles

When: Thu., July 21, 9 p.m. 2011

A band from Arkansas calls itself Memphis Pencil, a slight geographic disconnect that speaks to an openly disjointed style. The band warps '60s and '70s psychedelia, rolling the Byrds and Captain Beefheart together into one strangely attractive sound. There's a sweet, skiffle-like lilt, while ghostly Beach Boys "oohs" wander independently of the melody. Hollow reverb surrounds many of the vocal lines, lending a gothic weirdness, yet it's all delivered with an infectious confidence. Messy Sparkles, a solo project from one part of the Pencil, and Raleigh's Oulipo round out the bill. —Corbie Hill
