Ryan Gosling returns in front of the lingering lens of Nicolas Winding Refn, who directed him in that slicked-out bit of cool Drive. Gosling is an expatriate boxing-club owner living in Thailand, forced to avenge the death of his underaged prostitute-killing brother, a death orchestrated by a sword-wielding, police lieutenant (Vithaya Pansringarm), by his vulgar, drug-smuggling harridan of a mother (Kristin Scott Thomas). Gosling plays another strong-yet-silent sociopath whose botched attempts at vengeance do more harm than good. Going all Lynchian in this, Refn turns this underworld yarn into a moody, blood-soaked nightmare, complete with long, darkened shots of beet-red hallways, odd interludes where people sing karaoke, downright insane moments of violence and other strange shit.
