The second Palestinian movie to receive an Oscar nomination for Best Foreign Language Film opens with a supporting character doing a very funny Don Corleone impression to amuse Nadia, who lives in Israel on the other side of a 20-foot wall. The title character is a skeptical wiseacre rather than a fighter, but he gets caught up in an act of futile violence that makes him a wanted man. When he's tricked into a quasi-confession, the movie narrows into a conventional and not especially convincing thriller despite a few good chase scenes. But the beauty of Omar is the depth of feeling of the young actors. They're rebels with a cause that grinds their lives into dust. Unrated.
