Old Habits, The Gravy Boys, Tommy Edwards

When: Thu., March 6, 7 p.m. 2014

This year marks the close of the second decade for the Community Music School, a Raleigh nonprofit that aims to offer life lessons through instrument and voice lessons to the children of local low-income families. As arts education budgets have suffered, their sort of after-hours activism has grown even more meaningful. Tonight, three area bluegrass acts play in a fundraiser that demonstrates the lifetime pleasure of learning an instrument: Tommy Edwards, who opens with his long-running Bluegrass Experience, has been making music in the region for nearly four decades. On the other end, headliners Old Habits are relatively young men yet, making playful acoustic pop about the wonders of vices. In terms of age, style and this bill, Gravy Boys sit in the middle, as these five adults with day jobs move between modern country radio and more traditional fare. —Grayson Haver Currin (Correction: The Gravy Boys are a quintet, not a quartet, as the original piece stated.)
