Of Montreal, Surface to Air Missive

When: Tue., Oct. 22, 9 p.m. 2013

The three albums following Of Montreal's brilliant 2007 breakthrough, Hissing Fauna, Are You The Destroyer?, spiraled deeply into a psyche bedeviled by emptiness, isolation, paranoia and self-destruction. With frontman Kevin Barnes' love of psychedelic imagery and Bowie fetishism, the albums suggest Robyn Hitchcock obsessing over the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. Some lyrics veer toward impenetrable gobbledygook, but as with Sir Paul, Barnes' deft melodic touch redeems a lot. Their latest, Lousy With Sylvianbriar, hardly abandons those dark undercurrents, but it at least leavens the dense prog with less claustrophobic songs and stronger backbeats. The rich tonal palette runs from the pastoral art folk of "Sirens of Your Toxic Spirit" to the mesmerizing mod bounce of "Belle Glade Missionaries." What's more, "Obsidian Currents" even invokes a yacht rock sway as it assails duplicitous ivory tower Raskolnikovs and offers something resembling a return to form. —Chris Parker
