When: Thu., Oct. 27, 8:30 p.m. 2011
Remember that big-eared dude in the tie-dye T-shirt, cursing up a storm on the MTV Video Music Awards this year? Well, that was "Best New Artist" Tyler, the Creator, expressing the kind of unadulterated joy everybody else was way too cynical or scared to allow (because of their agents and peers, natch). Tyler won based on the reputation of "Yonkers," a haunting, hilarious, art-damaged dirge of a rap in which he wishes for pop star B.o.B's death, confesses to many of his own failings, and, in the video, both eats a bug and hangs himself.
Odd Future is Tyler's crew of skate-prick rappers, screamers and moshers (and one totally awesome DJ, Syd Tha Kyd), who blew up thanks to an impressive amount of music tossed up on Tumblr. They invoked Wu-Tang comparisons and stirred up dozens of think pieces about their socially redeeming value, or lack thereof. The hook to their song "Radicals" goes, "Kill people/ Burn shit/ Fuck school," which is either a cathartic expression of youthful frustration or just plain dumb. Either way, it's fun to scream back at the freaky mess of youth onstage having as much fun as you, if not more. The 8:30 p.m. show is sold out. —Brandon Soderberg
