North Face (Nordwand)

Rated NR 121 min. 2010

Set in 1936, this German mountain-climbing drama is based on a true story about two best friends, Toni (Benno Frmann) and Andreas (Florian Lukas), attempting to scale the Eiger, a peak of the Swiss Alps. Following their journey is Luise, a dowdy (if persistent and ambitious) aspiring photographer (the dynamic Johanna Wokalek). Intermittently successful and entertaining, the better bits of North Face take place on the ground, mostly due to Wokalek and her story arc, which . Suffering from poor composition and the gag-inducing direction Luise's story takes, most disconcerting is the film's unintentional Nazi apologia, as director and co-writer Philipp Stlzl stage-whispers to his audience to ignore the fact that the German journey up the mountainside was a Nazi-encouraged stunt.
