Noah

Rated PG-13 138 min. 2014

A great third act that echoes the ending of John Ford's western classic The Searchers can't prevent this from being director Darren Aronofsky's weakest motion picture to date. Aronofsky (The Wrestler; Black Swan) is a talented director with a unique visual sense, but here he is mired down by influences (Cormac McCarthy's novel The Road, for starters) that come dangerously close to crossing the line between homage and rip-off; and angel characters who are ridiculous walking rock formations that could only come from the mind of a film studio exec dreaming of action figure toy sales. The veterans in the cast, anchored by Russell Crowe in the title role, are fine, but the true standout is Logan Lerman's (The Perks of Being a Wallflower) heartbreaking performance as Noah's middle child, Ham.
