Nick Meglin

When: Sun., Dec. 2, 4 p.m. 2012

Many a venerable magazine has come and gone, but MAD, which has made fun of every one of them, has endured. And as it happens, a veteran editor of this, the single most important magazine in the world, resides in Durham. Nick Meglin, who worked for MAD for nearly half a century, is promoting two different books related to the magazine: the No. 1 New York Times best seller Totally Mad and MAD's Greatest Artists: Mort Drucker: Five Decades of His Finest Works. Since leaving MAD, Meglin has also had a huge career in musical theater, including a sequel to A Christmas Carol and a Grumpy Old Men musical. Visit Indy Week's Artery blog for our interview with Meglin, in which he recalls such incidents as getting a letter from George Lucas' lawyers after MAD's parody of Star Wars; the lawyers backed off after he showed them a fan letter for the parody from Lucas himself. Meglin appears at the Cary Barnes & Noble at 4 p.m. —Zack Smith
