Nicholas Sailer

When: Fri., Dec. 19, 8-9 p.m. 2014

SO & SO BOOKSIf you have any interest in creative writing, you've probably put yourself on a poem-or-story-a-day regimen at some point—and then, realizing the insanity, stopped. But Raleigh filmmaker Nicholas Sailer kept going. His project to write a piece of short fiction every day for a year began on Jan. 1, 2014. Now, a couple of weeks away from the finish line, Sailer is preparing to publish (with a Kickstarter campaign running through the end of 2014) all 365 results of his narrative experiment in two hardcover volumes, among other formats. You can see a prototype of the hardcover when Sailer reads from it at So & So Books. The stories will also be published on his website, one per day, throughout 2015. A sampling is already available, and, while one doesn't imagine the O. Henry Prize committee will be calling, the stories show an admirable energy and diversity for such a grueling project. Sailer, whose film work has screened at Cannes and won large student film festivals, knows his way around a slice of life. One expects these vignettes, taken together, to exceed the sum of their parts. If nothing else, go see him read to prove to yourself that your own self-imposed writing marathon is attainable. 8 p.m., free, 704 N. Person St., 919-426-9502, —Brian Howe
