New River Boys, Philip H Mancuso, Jude Moses

When: Fri., Jan. 11, 10 p.m. 2013

Want to know what North Carolina roots music sounds like in a world that's enjoyed both The Avett Brothers and a relatively recent indie-folk insurgence? Then check this three-act bill. Headliners The New River Boys, of Boone, apply goofy enthusiasm to string-band music, with big harmonies accessorizing songs about love and stories about (mis-)adventures. Raleigh's Philip H. Mancuso writes smart, snappy songs and sings them solo, belting the words over guitar with an oomph lately popularized by Sweden's Tallest Man on Earth. Most appealing might be Jude Moses, a Georgia transplant living in Blowing Rock. His songs feel like bold suggestions of what he wants to hear in fellow guys with guitars, elegant textures spiraling into arrangements that clang and climax. The free show starts at 10 p.m. —Grayson Currin
