New Riders of the Purple Sage

When: Thu., July 28, 10 p.m. 2011

Hippie holdouts New Riders of the Purple Sage emerged from a late-'60s collaboration between guitarist David Nelson and Jerry Garcia of the Grateful Dead. As the union suggests, NRPS explore cosmic country with a predilection for folky improvisation. The songs possess the twangy '70s Cali-country that the Eagles would eventually turn into their personal mint, only with stronger psych and roots elements. They enjoyed a modicum of success (notably with 1973's bluegrass-flavored single "Panama Red"); after numerous lineup changes, the Riders lost momentum and finally called it quits in 1997. Six years ago, Nelson (who left in '82) retook the reins, and in 2009 they released their first studio disc in 17 years, Where I Come From. —Chris Parker
