U.S. Senator Cory Booker, a New Jersey Democrat, will visit Raleigh this weekend to address the state NAACP convention and appear at a rally for mayoral candidate Charles Francis.

Booker, who has been mentioned as a contender for the U.S. presidency in 2020, will give the NAACP's keynote speech at the Raleigh Convention Center, then appear along with Francis and U.S. Representative G.K. Butterfield at the five p.m. Saturday event at Southeast Raleigh High School (2600 Rock Quarry Road).

"We want to excite our Democrats for this mayor's campaign," Francis said. "I am very grateful that my friends Senator Booker and Congressman Butterfield will take the time and effort to help us on the final weekend before this election."

Booker, a former mayor of Newark, has been U.S. senator from New Jersey since 2013.

Francis, a Democrat, is challenging three-time Raleigh Mayor Nancy McFarlane, who is politically unaffiliated but has been endorsed by former North Carolina governor Jim Hunt. Voting is Tuesday for the mayoral contest, city council elections, and a bond referendum.
