NC Symphony

When: Fri., Nov. 5, 8 p.m. and Sat., Nov. 6, 8 p.m. 2010

The N.C. Symphony plays the influences game in Raleigh tonight and tomorrow, with a program that starts Romantic and dips back into music history before rounding out where it started. "From Brahms to Bach and Back Again," part of the symphony's classical series, examines the threads connecting Johannes Brahms' 10-movement "Variations on a Theme of Joseph Haydn" with preceding pieces—in this case, pieces by Bach, Haydn himself and Brahms. To see N.C. Symphony Music Director Grant Llewellyn discussing the concert program, check out the ensemble's YouTube channel. On Sunday, the symphony takes the show to Chapel Hill's Memorial Hall. From there, the show goes on the road, with the ensemble performing the "Brahms to Bach" program on the western side of the state through Nov. 13. —Margaret Hair
