“When you’re making out, which do you prefer, Sinatra or Mathis?” asks the sports geek in Barry Levinson’s Diner, attesting to the hugeness of Mathis in late-fifties America. Possessed of a gossamer, almost ululating vibrato, Mathis is best known for mellow hits like “Chances Are.” He’s worked in a host of styles, not all of them strictly easy listening. Still, the once and future make-out king won’t mind delivering romantic hits to the faithful, especially to the strains of the state’s symphony. —David Klein
