NC Symphony: The Rite of Spring Centennial

When: Thu., May 16, 8 p.m. 2013

Igor Stravinsky's score for The Rite of Spring has been at the forefront of the Triangle's cultural scene for months. The Carolina Performing Arts season has mounted many memorable events and commissions built around the centennial of its notorious 1913 premiere in Paris, which saw fistfights over aesthetics and conventions. Now, the North Carolina Symphony gets into the mix with three nights of performances of Stravinsky's work, centered on a piece people still talk about a century later. This music still sounds like it was composed yesterday, and when you hear it live, you might believe someone will be writing the exact same thing upon its bicentennial in 2113. After Thursday's opening show at UNC-Chapel Hill's Memorial Hall, the Symphony heads to Raleigh for Friday–Saturday shows at Meymandi. —Chris Vitiello
