N.C. Symphony: The Rat Pack, 100 Years of Frank!

When: Fri., May 20, 8 p.m. and Sat., May 21, 3 & 8 p.m. 2016

In this centenary year of Frank Sinatra’s birth, every salute is an occasion to consider his artistry and his status as the first modern pop superstar of the twentieth century. Tributes like this one, which focuses on his Las Vegas years, are fun, but reveling in this particular Scotch-soused bro phase seems more about an easily digestible package than musical genius. Even the song selection—sentimental treacle like “Mr. Bojangles,” novelties like “That’s Amore”—values razzmatazz more than the gifts of The Voice. Rat Pack Frank was Frank at his most tacky and boorish and shady. In this season of Trump, who needs more of that? —David Klein
