NC Symphony Summerfest Opening NIght

When: Sat., May 25, 7:30 p.m. 2013

Brahms doesn't mind if you wear flip-flops: The North Carolina Symphony kicks off Summerfest, its outdoor series of classical music for the kids-and-coolers set, with Brahms' happy Symphony No. 2. William Henry Curry conducts the symphony, which will nearly double in size when it absorbs "citizen musicians" for the rest of the program—Hérold's Zampa Overture, Vaughan Williams' English Folk Song Suite and Sibelius' Finlandia. Summerfest continues into July with eight shows in all, including toe-tapping nights of music from Oscar-winning movies and Broadway shows, an all-Beatles evening, a space odyssey with Holst's The Planets and HD projections, and an Independence Day concert offering a prime view of the evening's fireworks. —Chris Vitiello
