There are innovators, and there are entertainers. And then, there are the rare foundational artists who not only changed the art but dazzled, too. Louis Armstrong’s voice-like trumpet and Ella Fitzgerald’s trumpet-like voice transformed swing and jazz, and they’re still among the best-selling artists of the genre. Joined by horn player Byron Stripling and sultry singer Marva Hicks, the North Carolina Symphony honors the progenitors with a swinging program. —Chris Vitiello
