NC Symphony: Peter and the Wolf

When: Sat., Jan. 3, 1 & 4 p.m. 2015

The North Carolina Symphony offers the perfect way to close holiday family time before school resumes. Russian composer Prokofiev was so excited about a commission for a piece that would introduce children to the instruments of the orchestra that he penned Peter and the Wolf—music, story and all—in four days. Each character in this rural drama has a particular orchestral voice and theme. Peter is the string instruments; his protective grandfather is the bassoon; the foolish duck takes the oboe’s honk; the sinister call of the French horns heralds the wolf’s arrival. A cast of performers joins with the Triangle Youth Ballet to stage this classic story. Pre-concert activities include face painting and the symphony’s Instrument Zoo. —Chris Vitiello
