When: Fri., Feb. 25, 8 p.m. and Sat., Feb. 26, 8 p.m. 2011
Guest conductor Carlos Miguel Prieto leads the North Carolina Symphony through a modern-era take on traditionally sourced pieces this weekend, with a program featuring Ginastera's "Variaciones Concertantes," Copland's "Billy the Kid Suite" and Rachmaninoff's "Symphonic Dances." Each piece nods heavily toward its culturally specific, folk-leaning source material, as Ginastera, Copland and Rachmaninoff look respectively to Argentinian, American and Russian musical traditions for their motifs. The program, part of the ensemble's "Orchestra Showcase" series featuring especially difficult works, starts at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday. —Margaret Hair
