NC Symphony: Civil War Songs

When: Thu., Oct. 30, 10:30 a.m. 2014

Even as America launches more international “peacekeeping” efforts abroad, we’re currently cycling through significant anniversaries of several of our nation’s biggest wars: the centennial of World War I, the bicentennial of the War of 1812 and the 150th anniversary of the Civil War. While the War of 1812 yielded the seldom-sung slave-keeping verses of our unfortunate national anthem, the Civil War produced some more progressive efforts, “The Battle Cry of Freedom” among them. The N.C. Symphony will explore some of those standards—and “Ashokan Farewell,” a song associated with that period though written more than a century later—in a compelling collaboration with the state’s Department of Cultural Resources. —Grayson Haver Currin
