N.C. Symphony: Beethoven & Mozart

When: Fri., Oct. 9, 8 p.m. and Sat., Oct. 10, 8 p.m. 2015

Mozart and Beethoven did much to define what we think of as “classical music,” of course, and are probably the most performed composers in the realm. This concert compares how each approach the fugue and the sonata. Beethoven is the clear winner of the fugues. His Grosse Fuge is a gnarled masterpiece that is still avant-garde today. Mozart’s Adagio and Fugue, while lovely, pales in comparison. The sonata form is a fairer fight. Beethoven’s first symphony includes many regal twists and turns, but it is nowhere near as darkly expansive as Mozart’s Piano Concerto 24. —Dan Ruccia
