NC Symphony & Fireworks

When: Mon., July 4 2011

The Triangle's biggest fireworks display go off here after a performance by the North Carolina Symphony, playing Johns Sousa and Williams and Russian master Tchaikovsky. Gates open at 3 p.m. for this free event, which includes an ice cream eating contest, a regatta and magic shows for kids. The music begins at 7:30 p.m. One of the most placid and picturesque large venues on the East Coast, Koka Booth is the perfect spot for such a summertime rite, as kids and their parents who brought the blankets crane their necks to watch the fireworks break beyond the tree line. If picnic blankets aren't your thing, reserve a crescent table seat, which includes food and a preferred parking pass for $140. —Lauren Taylor Shute, Grayson Currin
