NC Symphony and Branford Marsalis

When: Thu., Sept. 18, 7:30 p.m. 2014

Whether you find saxophonist and composer Branford Marsalis refreshing or old-hat, he brings a dose of difference to the North Carolina Symphony’s 2014–2015 season starter. The program opens the door for Marsalis to shine as much as he wants, as Alexander Glazunov’s shifty Saxophone Concerto and experimentalist Erwin Schulhoff’s colorful Hot Sonata comes sandwiched between Bernstein and Debussy. Marsalis and the symphony reprise their performance Friday and Saturday nights at Raleigh’s Meymandi Concert Hall at 8 p.m. —Chris Vitiello

Price: $10-$65
