NC Dance Alliance

When: Oct. 14-16 2011

One of the highlights of this weekend's annual conference of the N.C. Dance Alliance is its choreographers showcase, an adjudicated collection of professional-level dance that, according to Raleigh choreographer Renay Aumiller, "presents some of the diverse works that are being created in our state." This year, that includes the world premiere of Aumiller's "Burrow," a work she created after winning the 2011 NCDA Choreography Fellowship. It features a quintet of regional dancers including Campbell McMillan, Nicola Bullock and members of Even Exchange Dance Ensemble, set to a rhythmic and spoken-word sound score by Kristen Sandler.

"It's nice to have the freedom the fellowship gives you toward props, light design and studio space," Aumiller notes. "But we have these brilliant dancers in North Carolina who don't get paid a lot of the time, so I chose most of it to go to the dancers." The 8 p.m. event in Weaver Auditorium includes works by Gretchen Alterowitz and Kim Jones of Charlotte, Virginia Dupont and Carol Finley of Greensboro and Natalie Marrone of Raleigh. —Byron Woods
