My Morning Jacket, Band of Horses

When: Sun., Aug. 26, 6:30 p.m. 2012

The last time My Morning Jacket visited the area, the pre-set decibel levels at Cary's Koka Booth Amphitheatre infamously squelched the Kentucky band's famously brazen live show. Fans complained, stories were written, and eventually Cary officials bumped the numbers a bit higher. But if you've seen a show at Raleigh Amphitheater, you know that the downtown experience might not be any better for MMJ; between the venue's own decibel limits and the way the glorified parking lot seems to scatter sound, rock acts such as Wilco and Fleet Foxes recently have sounded swallowed by the city in the space.

But if My Morning Jacket can find the right levels, they're one of the best touring bands in the world, sculpting shows with a preternatural understanding of pace, builds, falls and the kind of grand moments that make people talk about the gig long after it's over. Though their albums in recent years have tended more to reflect the moodier side of frontman Jim James' oeuvre, the band still gives over to onstage bombast in order to create in-the-crowd joy.
