Gigi Dover and Jim Lauderdale

It's old home night Saturday, Aug. 17 at the Cat's Cradle, for N.C. roots-music/Americana fans with Carolina natives Gigi Dover and Jim Lauderdale. Headliner Dover, who cut her teeth fronting alt-country rockers the Rank Outsiders, has stepped forward as a songwriter in her own right on her debut disc, Unpicked Flowers. Enlisting both ex-bandmates (Outsiders Bill Noonan and Ray Mitchell) and Nashville cats (Duane Jarvis and Greg Wetzel), Dover moves beyond familiar twang territory to show off her vocal chops. Joining Dover is Jim Lauderdale, whose Nashvegas-style tux (pictured above) is worthy of a music spotlight of its own. Lauderdale, with eight solo albums under his belt, has just released a new disc, The Hummingbirds, along with his second collaboration, Lost in the Lonesome Pines, with old-time music legend Ralph Stanley and the Clinch Mountain Boys. (It's the follow-up to his and Stanley's first offering, the Grammy-nominated I Feel Like Singing Today.) Lauderdale's rep as a fine, pure country songwriter--the kind with an ache in his voice and a respect for country's traditional stylings--make this a don't-miss show. --Angie Carlson
