In case you weren't around when KRS-One got his start writing and producing music in New York's South Bronx in the '80s, KRS-One stands for Knowledge Reigns Supreme Over Nearly Everyone. True to his name, the artist has reigned as one of the most influential lyricists in hip hop for close to two decades, since he and DJ Scott La Rock released their landmark debut album Criminal Minded in 1987. From an artist who's work has "edutained" listeners on the science of vegetarianism, the perils of materialism and the problem of police brutality, and who has embraced both black nationalism and Rastafarianism, it is no surprise that his latest release sings the gospel. KRS-One will be in town promoting his new release, Spiritual Minded, a collection of tunes influenced by gospel music. He will perform Friday, Feb. 15 at the Cat's Cradle in Carrboro. --Clancy Nolan
