Murphey School Radio Show

When: Sat., March 1, 3 & 7 p.m. 2014

The Murphey School Radio Show is a charming concoction born at the Shared Visions Retreat Center. Now in its fourth year in a WPA-era auditorium that Shared Visions restored on its property, these seasonal radio shows connect worthy social causes to a celebration of old-time live variety entertainment. Local literary and musical celebrities are recruited, and musician and writer Peter Kramer, among others, helps craft an evening of songs, advertising jingles, skits and dramatic readings. Saturday's performances will feature Raleigh novelist Wilton Barnhardt (Lookaway, Lookaway), Sacrificial Poet Starr Seward, author and teacher Minrose Gwin and three-time National Hollerin' Contest champion Tony Peacock. The music will include 1930s Yiddish numbers from Jane Peppler and Ken Bloom, and Ironing Board Sam is also on the bill. Proceeds will go to support Farmer Foodshare and Meals on Wheels of Durham. —David Fellerath
