Mud | Indy Week

Rated PG-13 130 min. 2013

You could program an entire film festival around remote Southern peoples and threatened waterways, from Wild River to Deliverance to Beasts of the Southern Wild. This latest entrant, from writer-director Jeff Nichols (Taking Shelter), isn't in the same class, however. Matthew McConaughey's hair and ripped physique look far too expensive for him to be believable as a Faulkneresque desperado living on an island in the middle of Arkansas' Lower White River. The pictures are pretty, but the cornpone details and humdrum dramatic situations are generic when they're not unconvincing—right down to the title, which is the hero's nickname. Demerits, too, for the film's failure to show us how McConaughey's Mud gets a large boat down from a tree. Reese Witherspoon is good, though, as a coarse redneck princess (more, please).
