Calle 54

Spanish Director Fernando Trueba's Calle 54, a documentary tribute to Latin jazz, includes not only one of the last recorded film performances of the late Tito Puente, but also features and rediscovers many well-known Latin-jazz masters. With performances filmed in a variety of locales from New York to Europe, Truebas' roll-call of musicians includes saxophonist Gato Barbieri, pianist Bebo Valdes (who plays duets with son, Chucho), deceased drummer Tito Puente and trumpeter Terry Gonzalez. Alternating introductions, interviews and jazz sets, the documentary has been loosely compared to Buena Vista Social Club and repeatedly brought audiences to their feet at the 2000 Toronto Film Festival. Calle 54 is presented by the North Carolina Museum of Art Summer Series and will feature a performance by local Latin jazz band, Carnavalito. See "Special Showings" for theaters.
