Dogtown and Z-Boys
You may notice from the oh-so-casual references to Vans--the shoe of choice for Z-Boys--that this documentary about the origins of skateboarding was financed in part by the shoe company. Dogtown may be a promotional film at heart, but former Z-Boy Stacy Peralta's documentary tells of a culturally significant time period in California skateboard culture (especially when keeping in mind today's explosion of extreme sporting events). Narrated by Sean Penn, the film features original footage shot in the 1970s, and details how the Z-Boys--a group of grungy skaters and surfers in the blighted areas of Santa Monica and Venice, known as Dogtown--spun off from surfer culture and made a name for themselves by draining swimming pools and showing off their moves.
