Moulin Rougeathon

As part of their continuing Winter Film Series, the N.C. Museum of Art will hold Moulin Rougeathon this weekend, screening both Baz Luhrmann's 2001 film, Moulin Rouge, starring Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor, and John Huston's 1953 version. Starring Jose Ferrer and Zsa Zsa Gabor, the 1953 film is more subdued, a biography of art nouveau painter Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec and to a lesser extent the atmosphere of 1890s Paris and its most famous landmark, the Moulin Rouge. But like last year's film, which Roger Ebert affectionally called "like being trapped in an elevator with the circus," Huston's Moulin Rouge was a blockbuster, beautifully filmed and nominated for seven Oscars. See "Special Showings" for details.
