The Tingler
This weekend, as part of their continuing Natural Horror Picture Show series, the N.C. Museum of Natural Sciences is screening William Castle's stylish 1959 thriller, The Tingler. Vincent Price stars in this camp classic as a coroner who discovers that fear is created by a creepy parasite that grows on the spinal cord of every living vertebrate. After much hard work, he captures the creature but the terror comes when the parasite breaks free. The film--the first to ever depict an LSD trip on screen--is probably best known for its theatrical gimmicks: When The Tingler first opened in theaters, joy buzzers implanted in seats would vibrate at the most frightening moments. The Tingler also stars Judith Evelyn, Darryl Hickman and Philip Coolidge. See "Special Showings" for details.
